Carnival of Cities #3, Urban Planet

A warm Home Turf Media welcome to both carnival newcomers and those who have already enjoyed Carnival of Cities #1 and #2.

We’re pretty heavy on North American cities this week, so we want to encourage you to submit your best posts about urban centers/centres on other continents (still waiting on that first South American or African or Middle Eastern post.)

** Cities in the Americas **

Houston, Texas, USA    Bill at Wisebread wants you to know why a bad first job is good for you. It’s the first in a series of articles about how to break into Houston’s advertising industry (and how a hurricane can focus your career aspirations) but the lessons learned are applicable to anyone in any city.

Seattle, Washington, USA    Mary Jo Manzanares tells us about the thought-provoking photography exhibit “Captured Youth” at Pioneer Square’s James Harris Gallery.  Writing at The Seattle Traveler, she is struck by the subjects; teens who are incarcerated at various Washington State correctional facilities, and the stories of their lives.

Des Moines, Iowa, USA    Doug Mitchell wants to know what would happen if “Little House on the Prairie’s” Charles Ingalls had venture funding (or How America’s Heartland Is HOT.)   Blogging at Moments of Clarity, Doug says that investment opportunities are outstanding in the oft-dismissed “flyover country,” and he thinks more people ought to appreciate the considerable charms of the Midwest, particularly places like Des Moines.

Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA    Alli Crumley extends a warm welcome to Chattanooga visitors (it’s natural that you will love it here.)  She is confident that the city’s natural beauty and urban amenities are a delightfully perfect combination. Find out more at her blog Chattanooga Is Home.

San Francisco, California, USA    The Silicon Valley Blogger is appalled that this old house is worth US$ 1.23 million compared to a gorgeous home in another attractive Western US city.  SVB posts this brutal real estate price comparison smackdown at The Digerati Life

Bellevue, Washington, USA    Steve Madsen tells us that in Bellevue, Seattle’s younger sister is growing up. Blogging at Exit Row Seat, Steve says to ”take a break from Seattle and cross the lake to relax.”

 ** Cities in Asia **

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia    CJCM discovers that Zass!!, the world’s first mobile hair salon, is in Kuala Lumpur.   One of Home Turf Media’s bloggers in Asia, he writes at Kuala Lumpur is Home and says, ”This is about the world’s first mobile hair salon…. imagine having a hair cut in a bus that takes you around the city of Kuala Lumpur….. isn’t that cool?”  Actually, I think it’s great that it goes to different locations, but I’d rather that it stayed stationary while the scissors are out.

Tokyo, Japan    Seafarer at Family Travel presents a detailed itinerary from Asakusa to Odaiba. This is a day visit to one of the oldest and one of the newest of the many little micro-towns that make up the massive 12-million-person Tokyo metropolis.

 ** Cities in Europe **

Preston, Lancashire, the United Kindom    Riversider argues against excessive development and barrage construction on the historic River Ribble, near the town of Preston.  His post asks, “Riverworks, who stands to gain: property consultants or the environment?” and is featured on the blog Save The Ribble

Berlin, Germany    Steve presents Five Favs - Berlin, Germany posted at Exit Row Seat.  The German city is reviving and exploding with excitement, and he plans to spend a year there in the future.

Fribourg, Switzerland    Jul describes colorful Fribourg in words and lovely photos at her blog This non-American Life.  Switzerland is divided into cantons, or regions, that each tend to have a distinct ethnic flavor in everything from food to voting patterns.  Fribourg is on the fault line known as the Rostigraben, and it looks like a spectacular place to visit.

That concludes this edition of the Carnival.

Speaking of city happenings, I’ll be at the Austin, Texas mega-event South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive this coming week, but I’m still ready for you to submit your blog article (by 2 pm Eastern, Sunday 10 March) to the next edition using our carnival submission form.  We will publish Carnival of Cities #4 on Monday, 11 March.

[…] Home Turf Media is hosting the Carnival of Cities #3, Urban Planet blog carnival this month, and Sheila included two of my recent posts in this wonderful and eclectic group of writers. I especially enjoyed reading CJCM’s article about the mobile hair salon in Kuala Lumpur, reminding me of the many innovative entrepreneurs I met while living there twenty years ago. […]
