Carnival of Cities #8, Global Village
Welcome to Home Turf Media and the April 10, 2007 edition of the Carnival of Cities; we appreciate your patience as we decided to post one day later than normal, given the Easter holiday and many readers taking Monday off.
Around the world we go….
** Cities in the Americas **
Charleston, South Carolina, USA Jaz bemoans his failure to lunch properly and the terrible habit of snarfing down fast food, so he tries to make up for it with “just a bite of culinary Charleston…” and a review of the Bluerose Cafe at his blog Wicked Winter. I can’t go for the entree choice of liver and onions, even if that’s his comfort food, but the green beans and mashed potatoes sound yummy!
San Diego, California, USA Did you know that it’s Butterfly Season at the Wild Animal Park? Carole Lane, posting at The San Diego Beat, says that the world-famous San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park “is sharing a neo-tropical paradise with 10,000 butterflies and as many park visitors, while supporting ‘butterfly farms’ as an alternative industry to help save the rainforests.”
Tampa, Florida, USA J Bradley has a mission; to photograph the street people of Tampa in a way that gives them dignity and personality. He presents Rob 4/4/2007 on his blog TAMPA TWO.
Great Falls (and environs) Montana, USA Get ready for some nifty photos of A Good Egg, the Montana-themed Easter eggs that are presented every year for the White House Easter Egg hunt and celebration. These are really some imaginative creations! David Sherman writes The Big Sky Blog, with lots of good info about the Big Sky Country in the American West, where the buffalo roam (well, in a few spots still.)
New York, New York, USA Remember Wesley Autrey, who jumped onto the tracks and prevented a horrible subway accident in January 2007? Here’s another example of how the NYC subway hero does good, because it’s just what you do. Read more about New York City life at shedwa.
Honolulu, Hawaii, USA Are you a lighthouse fan? Evelyn promises that we’ll leave the light on for you! at Homespun Honolulu, saying, “Lighthouses continue to attract people for a variety of reasons. Honolulu is not without its share of these ever-popular landmarks.”
Memphis, Tennessee, USA Mother Road says let’s go to Memphis in the meantime. She describes the delights of Beale Street, Stax Records, Elvis, wet vs. dry BBQ, Isaac Hayes (”can you dig it?”) and the National Civil Rights Museum at her blog Kid Trippin’, part of the Disney Web site Family.com.
** Cities in Europe **
Preston, United Kingdom Riversider presents a detailed discussion of barrages and wetland ecosystems and their environmental and economic impact, specifically on the River Ribble in the UK. More info is posted at Save The Ribble.
Dublin, Ireland Irish novelist hellojed is not happy about the Good Friday prohibition; against drinking, that is. Writing at his blog It Had Better Be Good, he discusses ”how the alcohol ban on Good Friday in Ireland disrupts an important tradition and beloved institution,” which is craic at the pub. You have to click the link to find out about craic.
Cambridge, United Kingdom Are you a Pink Floyd fan? Here’s your chance to buy Syd Barrett’s house….Renata Vincoletto presents Falando pelos Cotovelos - Pink Floyd, Cambridge, Cherry Hinton and me posted at A geek Family.
** Cities in Asia **
Mauritius, Indian Ocean Alfa King examines a recent election invalidation in Mauritius, as he keeps track of political developments at his blog Alfa King Memories.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia CJCM says that thanks to the National Bloggers Alliance, blogging in Malaysia just got merrier. At his blog Kuala Lumpur is Home, he writes, ”Malaysian blogging enters new phase. With the efforts by the government to curb the influence of Malaysian socio-political bloggers, the National Bloggers Alliance is formed. It will be interesting to see what this means in the future for these bloggers.”
** Cities in Australia **
Sydney, Australia I heard about this event in a couple of news media outlets; Andrea tells us about Earth Hour in Sydney at her wide-ranging blog Buy Organic.
Brisbane, Australia The Brisbane ZombieWalk 2007: My 14 Best Photos is posted by David Jackmanson at his blog Brisbane Is Home. He writes, ”250 zombies lumbered into Brisbane’s Roma St Parklands‘ Amphitheatre to start the annual Brisbane Zombiewalk.” I like the zombies who are pushing against the stage and yelling, “Brains!”
That concludes this edition, zombie readers included.
Reminder: please only submit one post to us, using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.
I am in and out “of the office” doing some NASCAR blogging for Motorsport.com, an article for the new online magazine Automotive Traveler and a great blogging conference in Chicago, so we still need other hosts for the Carnival of Cities.
