Evelyn - Honolulu

EvelynBorn and raised on Oahu, Honolulu has always been my home! My parents were living in Aina Haina when I was born (East Honolulu). Not long after the death of my father, my mother sold our house and moved out to the west side of O’ahu. Whatever possessed her to move to Makaha I will never know (probably the comparably-lower cost of living), but, I’m glad she did! It was there that my adoration for this island put down deep roots, took hold and will never budge.

After graduating from Waianae High School, I attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I was aiming for Veterinary school but after two years of chemistry decided I couldn’t deal with that part of things. So, I went after my next passion — books and literature. Graduating from UH in 1986, I had just missed the computer-class requirement. I missed the boat!I got a computer somewhere along the way and learned the hard way — by my self and with the help of online brainiacs anxious to show off their knowledge. The Internet, of course, became a passion.

English major, Internet enthusiast, and a chance to talk about my home, Honolulu. Sounds like a perfect recipe to me! I ran into a job posting for Home Turf Media and here I be. This opportunity is truly a gift and I can only hope to do it justice.

I am happy to share what Hawaii, and specifically Honolulu, has to offer. My goal is to present not only the things that people rarely see or hear about in mainstream media, but also the things that they hear about a lot but from an entirely different perspective.

Yellow Hibiscus, Hawaii State FlowerThere is so much culture and so many events, aside from hula skirts and luaus, that are intrinsically ours.

There is also a part of Honolulu’s story that is tightly woven into the fabric of Americana. So much of what Honolulu is now, and how it got there, makes up a fascinating part of American history and makes us the 50th State.  I’m very proud to call Honolulu my Home Turf!
